PLATED

THE BRIEF

Come up with a concept for an app, then create it from from sketching through to prototyping and user testing.

About the app

‘Plated’ is a visually inspiring restaurant index that makes searching for and booking restaurants quick and easy.

Problem Space

How might we speed up the way in which person can find a restaurant with the right food, atmosphere and service for them?

Research

I gathered a lot of useful information from my interviews, which helped to identify key needs from the target audience. They found that other restaurant search tools were missing information that they wanted and were not visually enticing.

“It would be ideal to have an app I can always have on my phone that makes it quick and easy to find restaurants in a certain area, narrows down the type of food, and has a map to direct me from where I am.”

Personal Insights

By researching competitors I was able to critique what I did and didn’t like about them and why. Things like lots of information being presented to the user but all in different styling, which felt erratic and stressful. I also found through user testing of a lo-fi prototype revealed things such as the use of rating restaurants within the app weren’t clear enough and often user interactions didn’t marry up to the prototype. It was also clear that some tasks were confusing to complete as the wireframes were without content.

“I seem to have to try all the websites and apps to get what I want, I don't think any of them offer what I need.”

Journey Map

The journey map illustrated how I expected the user to behave with the app, from their problem space to a solution. It helped me to explore their processes, needs and emotional state across their interactions.

Wireframes

This was an important stage in the design process to help outline a more considered structure of the app. I carried out further research to assist me in figuring out best and worst practices when it came to certain design decisions. Adding in content to create high-fidelity wireframes enabled a more realistic experience of the app when creating prototypes for usability testing.

Solution

A mobile app that allows the user to search for restaurants, book and favourite them, and share them with friends. An in-depth filtering and sorting system inspired by user interviews and slick photography allows for the user to be both inspired and focused in their searches.
